I could have just as easily have had Rodney say he woke up and heard them talking and popped in, but a few things: I wanted to have Jake arrive at the dojo in some odd fashion, but his initial appearance was meant to surprise both Dornail and the reader. I also wanted to show Rodney playing with Chompy before the adventure started. Originally there was a scene of Rodney throwing things for Chompy to play with, but it had to be cut due to lack of space (ironically!). So Jake’s sleep delirium steps in nicely to assist by showing how out of it Jake is, Rodney describing why he was up (to play with Chompy), and describing Jake’s odd manner of arrival.

ha ha ha. You know.. I was thinking when I wrote this joke “This is so dumb… Don’t do this!!!!” But it’s Rodney right? So not only is it okay cause it’s a dumb joke, but he may also just be factually stating the brand of milk jug Jake used, innocently aware of any gags. So for me that works!!

Ha ha, well I think I’ve used that ‘Rodney is a Rodney’ bit in comments before, but this may be the first time it’s been in the comic! I wasn’t thinking of it when I wrote the line. I actually just wanted to illustrate that Jake’s at the end of a very long stretch of (for him) bizarre events and now it’s over. But you know, I’m glad I threw it in there. Good eye!
